A major update to ChatGPT's voice chats intensifies competition with Gemini.
OpenAI has announced a significant update to how ChatGPT's voice mode works on both the web and mobile apps. Users can now interact with the assistant using voice commands without leaving the conversation. The conversation transcript can be viewed directly while speaking, and visual aids such as maps and illustrations are also available.
To initiate a voice chat, users can click the waveform icon next to the text field. Users who prefer the older voice interface can revert to it by enabling "Separation" mode in ChatGPT's settings.
This update represents a natural extension of the multimedia model's capabilities, as it can already be triggered using audio, images, or video. OpenAI aims to deliver detailed and informative voice responses with this feature, similar to Google's Gemini Live experience, which allows AI to highlight specific parts of live video.
