Google Maps is preparing for a major transformation thanks to Gemini. What will change?
Google is preparing to launch a huge update that will change how navigation is used in the Google Maps app in the coming weeks. Gemini will replace the traditional Google Assistant within the app, offering a smarter and more seamless experience while driving, walking, or using public transportation.
Google explains that the update's arrival can be detected by the search icon at the top of the app. If a traditional microphone icon appears, it means the new features haven't arrived yet. However, if the blue Gemini icon appears, it confirms the update is activated and the new functions are available.
What does Gemini offer within Google Maps?
Gemini provides a wide range of smart commands that make navigation easier. It can be used to perform basic tasks such as getting home, stopping navigation, adding a new stop, avoiding tolls, or showing alternative routes. It also provides detailed information about the journey, such as the arrival time, the next stop, the weather at the destination, or the next stop.
You can also report problems you encounter on the road, such as traffic jams or construction work, which helps Google improve map accuracy in real time.
Smart Place Search While Driving
Gemini helps you find nearby places or locations along your route, such as: "Find a café near my destination that serves tiramisu." It can also provide additional information about places, such as popular dishes, opening hours, or details about important landmarks.
Perform Additional Tasks Without Leaving Maps
Gemini supports commands like making calls, sending messages, and playing music from various services like Spotify. It can also summarize emails or remind you of appointments, making the app a unified hub for tasks while on the go.
Landmark Navigation: The Long-Awaited Change
Google is bringing landmark navigation to the map. Instructions will change from "Turn right after 500 feet" to more specific directions like "Turn right after Thai Siam." These landmarks will also appear on the map as you follow your route, avoiding buildings or obscure features to ensure accurate navigation.
When Will the New Update Arrive?
Gemini helps you find nearby places or locations along your route. Although Google confirmed that Gemini would arrive on Google Maps during the first weeks of November, the update has not yet appeared on some devices, including the Pixel 6 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and is expected to gradually reach users in stages.
