Meta Acquires Limitless to Build a New Generation of Smart Devices
Meta is taking a significant step towards the wearables market with its acquisition of Limitless, the developer of the AI-powered Pendant. This acquisition reveals Meta's intention to expand its operations to include new smart devices beyond its well-known virtual reality headsets and glasses.
Limitless announced via a YouTube video and a blog post that its team will join Meta to develop innovative AI-powered consumer devices. CEO Dan Seruker stated that this move aligns with a shared vision to deliver superior personal intelligence through advanced AI-based devices.
Limitless began with Rewind, a program that records user activity on a computer and transforms it into a searchable database accessible through a smart assistant. The company later expanded into the wearables sector with Pendant, a small microphone that records users' everyday conversations and converts them into text for analysis, despite concerns about privacy.
The company confirmed that it will continue to support Pendant users for at least another year, while discontinuing sales of the device entirely. Existing users will be able to access all its features without a subscription and will have the option to export or delete their data as they wish.
Meta's entry into this field comes at a time of increasing competition in the wearable device market, particularly for voice recording. Amazon also acquired Bee in 2025 for similar reasons, and these devices appear to be attracting the attention of major companies thanks to their ability to transcribe speech to text and provide intelligent summaries.
With the appointment of Alan Day, former head of design at Apple, at Meta, experts anticipate a broader range of wearable devices within the company's ecosystem. This could include improvements to the Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses or the development of entirely new AI-powered devices.
