Grok Arrives on CarPlay: Elon Musk's Voice Assistant Officially Enters the Car World
xAI has launched "Grok Voice Mode" on Apple CarPlay, allowing drivers to speak directly to Elon Musk's AI assistant while driving. This move is expected to intensify the competition among in-car chatbots.
The feature is available through the latest update of the Grok app for iPhones, enabling users to have full voice conversations with the smart assistant. Whether asking questions, getting quick information, or even exchanging ideas while on the go, users can do so hands-free.
Limited Capabilities, But a Strong Start
While Grok is now available in CarPlay-enabled vehicles, the current experience is less integrated than in Tesla cars. The assistant cannot control vehicle systems like navigation or climate control, and it doesn't activate with a voice command like "Hey Grok." Instead, the app requires manual activation.
Nevertheless, this is a significant expansion for xAI, as CarPlay support means Grok will reach millions of iPhone users across multiple car brands, rather than being limited to Tesla vehicles.
The AI race moves to the dashboard. The addition of Grok to CarPlay comes amid a growing race among AI companies to gain access to in-car systems. Recently, apps like ChatGPT, Gemini, Cloud, and Perplexity have begun appearing in car infotainment systems after Apple opened the door to third-party voice assistants.
But Grok tries to stand out with its distinct personality, adopting a more sarcastic and "bold" approach compared to traditional, more subdued assistants. While some believe this style could enhance the driving experience, others fear it could become a source of distraction and chaos inside the car, especially during traffic jams and long drives.
